Nikki heard Peter softly knock on the door as he entered Nikki’s hospital room. Tess turned and saw him approaching Nikki’s bed. Nikki smiled at him.

“The test results are fine but I strongly suggest that you stay for another day or two for observation. There is nothing to be concerned about, but I would like to proceed with caution. Head injuries can be a little tricky. I prefer to err on the side of caution.”

Tess nodded in agreement.

“I’m sure your partners are very capable and will be able to function without you for a few days.”

“I will let my partners know that you think so highly of them, Peter. Will I be allowed visitors?”

“Yes. I would like you to rest for the next day or two but there is no reason to keep you in seclusion.”

Nikki turned to Tess, as if waiting for an answer to an unspoken question.

“While I have you together, I would like to apologize to both of you. I’m sorry I didn’t introduce you sooner. I should have introduced you on the day you were both here at the hospital. It was the day Betty died. I think it would have made things less confusing if you had met then.”

“What?” Nikki and Tess said in unison. They were both shocked and waited for an explanation.

“You were both here at the hospital at the same time. You must have arrived within minutes of each other. I saw you standing near each other at the nurse’s station. Nikki was picking up her mother’s belongings and you, Tess, were asking the nurses for Betty’s room number. You know that Betty and Adrienne died within days of each other.”

Tess and Nikki were speechless until Tess finally asked how Peter knew Betty.

“She was a volunteer here at the hospital. We saw each other regularly. We became friendly and I asked if she would look in on my patients while they were in the hospital. She would give me informal reports and updates on their condition.”

Tess and Nikki remained silent.

“Then one day she walked into Adrienne’s room. I don’t think she knew the patient’s name before she entered the room. It wasn’t until that evening, while I was finishing my hospital rounds that I found Adrienne in her room crying. I couldn’t imagine why she was so upset. She told me that one of the volunteers, Betty Whitcomb, had come to visit her. It must have been shocking for them to meet again after so many years. I had no idea, at the time, that they knew each other.”

“Did you speak to Betty about it?”

“Not right away. She didn’t come to the hospital for several days. Adrienne was beside herself with worry. She begged me to find her. She made me promise that I would personally call Betty and make sure that she was okay. I promised her that I would take care of it and that I would make every effort to find her. I assured her that there were other friendly, capable volunteers who would be happy to visit her, but she insisted on Betty.
